the hidden price of the iphone 3g

The big tech announcement this week was the highly anticipated, much rumored 2nd generation iPhone dubbed the iPhone 3G, which is set to be released on July 11th. The $199 price tag seems amazing on the surface, but as Zadi broke down on today's episode -- calculating the cost of the new iPhone is a little more complicated than the upfront price tag.

First off, the data plan is $10 more a month, meaning an extra $240 you'll pay over the life of the 2-year contract. I've also heard rumors that the text messaging bundle will no longer be included. If that's true, expect an extra $5 a month for 200 messages (which BTW isn't enough for most people nowadays).

Then you have the new in-store activation requirement, which basically kills any possibility for non-AT&T users in the U.S. to purchase the phone and unlock it for use on a different network (e.g. people like me). So for me, I'd have to switch carriers and pay approximately 50% more on my phone bill every month -- just so I can use the Jesus2 Phone.

Personally, if I could walk out of the Apple store with an unactivated 3G iPhone for $400, I would probably do it. But considering that isn't the case, and considering all the hidden/extra costs, I'm not sure if I'll bite. Too bad, because I was a big fan of the 1st generation iPhone -- until I dropped it. Grr...
