The works of Alexey Titarenko hang in many museums around the world, but thanks to the web we get to see them whenever we want, and we get a chance to experience the painterly and haunting photographs from his Black & White Magic of St. Petersburg series. More images after the jump.
The titles give away minor clues about the image, but what struck me most was that the eerie qualities of the photos, which appear to be manipulated by photographic and digital methods, felt more like old memories that I couldn't quite recapture in my mind. There's something so familiar about them, and at the same time they are like cold observations of something that happened to pass in front of the camera -- maybe something ethereal that never even existed.
This series and many others are available at the artist's website.
