keep a healthy tempo without paying to see dr. beat
Posted by Paul Dateh

If you play music, you know the importance of practicing with a metronome. You might have even paid close to $200 for one of those extra-fancy Boss "Dr. Beat" metronomes. But, if you have an iPhone or iPod touch, you can now practice all those quirky time signatures and subdivisions to your heart's content without having to break the bank.

Frozen Ape's Tempo app offers many of the same features you would expect from other more expensive metronomes: subdivisions, tap-to-tempo selection, various meters and time signatures, chromatic pitch pipe, custom-accented rhythms, etc. It even offers a "play over iPhone music" feature (although I don't know why anyone would want that).

The click sound of Tempo's metronome is crisp, clear, and rhythmically accurate from what I've seen in my tests so far. If you prefer the sound of a wooden metronome or drum kit, there's a setting for that, too.

Tempo doesn't have the most attractive visual interface, but it's really not all that bad considering that there are a lot of uglier metronomes out there. And for $0.99, you can't really go wrong here.

Of course, Tempo isn't perfect. Like any other iPhone app, it is vulnerable to the occasional crash. But, if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to owning a stand-alone metronome, I would say Tempo is at least worth a try.
